To format a Western Digital hard drive on both Windows and Mac computers, you need to use the FAT32 file system. Although Windows 7 can format up to 32GB, it cannot format drives with more than 1TB.

  1. Connect your WD drive to Mac
  2. Double click the drive icon
  3. From the left pane, click Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility
  4. Choose WD in drive label
  5. Click Options
  6. Click Master Boot Record
  7. Click OK
  8. Under dropdown menu Volume Scheme, choose 1 Partition
  9. Choose MS-DOS
  10. Click Apply
  11. Choose Partition to confirm

  1. Connect your WD drive to PC
  2. Click Start, enter “cmd” in search bar
  3. Enter “format /FS:FAT32 X:”
  4. Press Enter
  5. Replace “X” with your WD drive letter
